Hal Finney passes away
Hal Finney, the first person besides Satoshi to run Bitcoin and the recipient of the first Bitcoin transaction, passes away from ALS at the age of 58.
Wife of Hal Finney, the first person other than Satoshi to run Bitcoin. She witnessed Bitcoin's earliest moments firsthand, cared for Hal through his ALS diagnosis, and became the primary keeper of his legacy after his death and cryopreservation in 2014.
Fran Finney met Hal Finney at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). She was a junior when Hal arrived as a freshman. She first saw him during “rotation week”: “I saw him in the middle of being lifted and carried by [upperclassmen].” She recalled how people would cluster around him for philosophical discussions: “When he spoke, what he said was usually worth listening to.”
Bitcoin: Fran witnessed Bitcoin’s birth firsthand. When Hal downloaded and ran the software on January 9, 2009, she described his reaction: “This is cool. This is a fun game. Look! This is actually working!” She also recalled how Hal’s early mining was cut short — she complained that the computer fan was too noisy at night.
ALS and Caregiving: In August 2009, Hal was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Fran became his primary caregiver as the disease progressed. She observed his cognitive decline: “It’s not a normal kind of dementia, but the brain is involved. Hal felt that it was affecting his ability to do his fast thinking, to do his mental math. He felt like he was losing that, and he would lose more.”
On Hal’s Worldview: “He did not believe in God. He believed in the future.”
“I know Hal wanted to be around. He wanted to experience the future. He was very excited about change… It seemed like he was happier with each and every change. Each change was great! He embraced it, and he was always looking forward to more.”
Cryopreservation: On October 15, 1992, Fran and Hal had signed their Alcor cryonics membership paperwork in Riverside, California. On Hal’s motivation: “I think that was a lot of his motivation for getting involved with cryonics in the first place. He just wanted to be able to see what the world turned into, because it was going to be such an amazing, wondrous place.”
Hal Finney died on August 28, 2014. He was cryopreserved by Alcor as their 128th patient (member A-1436). Fran is survived by their son Jason and daughter Erin.
