[p2p-research] Bitcoin open source implementation of P2P currency
Satoshi confirms Bitcoin is fully operational and offers to send coins to anyone who tries the software, in response to Michel Bauwens' question on the P2P Research mailing list.
Belgian political theorist and founder of the P2P Foundation who engaged with Satoshi Nakamoto on the P2P Research mailing list in February 2009, asking about Bitcoin's operational readiness.
Michel Bauwens (born March 21, 1958) is a Belgian political theorist, writer, and founder of the P2P Foundation, a global organization researching peer production, governance, and property. He has been a prominent voice in the study of peer-to-peer theory and commons-based governance, crafting transition plans for the government of Ecuador and the city of Ghent.
Interaction with Satoshi: On February 12, 2009, Bauwens was the first to respond to Satoshi Nakamoto’s announcement of Bitcoin on the P2P Research mailing list. He thanked Satoshi for sharing the initiative and invited the community’s more expert members to weigh in. Notably, Bauwens assumed Satoshi was Japanese, asking him to contribute information about Japanese initiatives to the P2P Foundation wiki.
On February 13, Bauwens asked Satoshi directly: “how operational is your project? how soon do you think people will be able to use it in real life?” Satoshi replied: “It’s fully operational and the network is growing. If you try the software, e-mail me your Bitcoin address and I’ll send you a few coins.”
Significance: As founder of the P2P Foundation — the platform where Satoshi also announced Bitcoin through a separate forum post — Bauwens provided an important early channel for Bitcoin’s exposure to the broader peer-to-peer research community. His question about operational readiness prompted one of Satoshi’s most direct early statements confirming that Bitcoin was fully functional and available for public use.

Satoshi confirms Bitcoin is fully operational and offers to send coins to anyone who tries the software, in response to Michel Bauwens' question on the P2P Research mailing list.
In an April 2025 interview, P2P Foundation founder Michel Bauwens recalled that Satoshi emailed him several times, offered him a few bitcoins, and explained why he was publishing the white paper on the P2P Foundation site. Bauwens also gave a mature retrospective on Bitcoin: he remained skeptical of its energy costs, but saw it as the first globally scalable, socially sovereign currency not issued by a firm or state.
